Anemia (low hemoglobin / iron deficiency)

Anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry proper oxygen to different parts of the body. Hemoglobin is an important protein present in red blood cells that helps transport oxygen from the lungs to the entire body. When the hemoglobin level becomes low, a person may feel weak, tired, dizzy, or short of breath. Iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of anemia because iron is necessary for the production of hemoglobin. This condition can affect children, adults, pregnant women, and elderly people, especially when the body does not receive enough nutrition.

The main cause of iron deficiency anemia is lack of iron-rich food in the daily diet. People who do not eat enough green vegetables, fruits, pulses, meat, eggs, or iron-rich foods may slowly develop low hemoglobin levels. Excessive blood loss is another major reason, such as heavy menstruation in women, internal bleeding, ulcers, piles, injuries, or surgeries. In some cases, the body cannot absorb iron properly due to digestive problems or intestinal diseases. Pregnant women are also at higher risk because their body needs extra iron for the growth of the baby. Poor lifestyle habits, malnutrition, and repeated infections can also contribute to anemia.

There are several symptoms that indicate anemia in the body. Common signs include constant tiredness, weakness, pale skin, headache, dizziness, fast heartbeat, chest discomfort, cold hands and feet, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience hair fall, brittle nails, or craving for non-food items like मिट्टी (soil) or ice, which is called pica. If anemia becomes severe and remains untreated for a long time, it may affect the heart, brain, immunity, and overall body strength. Children with anemia may face poor growth and learning difficulties, while adults may experience reduced work performance and low energy.

The treatment and remedies for anemia mainly focus on increasing hemoglobin and iron levels in the body. Eating iron-rich foods regularly is very important. Foods like spinach, beetroot, pomegranate, jaggery, dates, raisins, lentils, beans, nuts, red meat, fish, and eggs can help improve iron levels naturally. Vitamin C-rich foods such as oranges, lemons, tomatoes, and amla help the body absorb iron better. Doctors may also prescribe iron supplements, syrups, or injections depending on the severity of the condition. It is also important to avoid too much tea or coffee immediately after meals because they can reduce iron absorption.

Preventing anemia requires maintaining a healthy and balanced diet along with regular medical checkups. Pregnant women, growing children, and elderly people should especially monitor their hemoglobin levels from time to time. Drinking enough water, following proper hygiene, treating infections early, and managing any underlying diseases can also help prevent anemia. Regular exercise and good sleep improve blood circulation and overall health. If symptoms like severe weakness, continuous dizziness, or shortness of breath continue, a person should consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment because early care can prevent serious complications.
